Carer
The process for becoming a carer involves a review of your application, a quick chat over the phone, then a sit-down chat either in person or online. You'll face questions about different situations you might encounter, and we'll check your skills. We also do background checks and talk to your references. Sometimes there's a trial shift before we make you a job offer.
- Could you introduce yourself?
Cook
I was interviewed by the home manager and kitchen assistant. The interview lasted about an hour and had 26 questions. I found it difficult because it went on longer than I expected and there were many questions I wasn't ready for. Mostly situation-based questions like how to motivate people, your good and bad points at work and home, times your day went well or poorly and how you handled them, dealing with difficult individuals, your confidence in cooking specific dishes, evaluating teamwork skills, your knowledge of the company and the home, what you can contribute, areas for improvement, and whether you'd connect with the residents. Even though I rated it as difficult, the interviewers made me feel welcome and encouraged me since I mentioned being nervous, which is normal.
- Can you describe a negative experience at work and how you handled it?
Senior Carer
It was a really friendly chat. They didn’t ask anything too tricky, just the usual stuff like asking for examples of teamwork or how I handled difficult situations. They also asked why I was interested in care work and about my past experience. We also talked about potential career growth within the company and the NVQ training that’s offered.
- Could you share an instance where you faced a challenging situation and describe your approach to resolving it?
- Can you provide an example of a time you collaborated effectively within a team?
- What motivates you to pursue a career in care?
Human Resources Business Partner
Had a bunch of interviews, same questions each time with different people. There were IT issues because of a global IT update, so the last interview couldn't happen. They said they'd reschedule but never got in touch, which I thought was pretty bad given how much prep I did, and not what I'd expect from a company that's supposed to be caring. Anyway, I don't think I would've been a good fit because I'm really driven by my values, and I didn't feel like they were aligned.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
