About a week after submitting my application, I was invited for an initial phone call. The conversation lasted about 30 minutes and was very pleasant and informative. Many questions about Hays, my motivation, and expectations for the position were asked, but I also had enough time to ask my own questions. The invitation for a meeting with the department, which took place via Skype due to Covid19, came the very next day. This conversation lasted about 90 minutes and I was asked a lot of questions, but the atmosphere was also very pleasant, and the time didn't feel that long at the end. Even though I didn't get an offer in the end, I experienced the application process as positive and very appreciative throughout. As an applicant, you notice that at Hays, it's less about the professional background and more about the person behind the application.
