First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hawke Media.
Director of Corporate Development
I was contacted on LinkedIn by a recruiter, then I did a screen and interviewed with a Co-Founder. Then they put the role on pause because they weren't sure what they wanted and were thinking of hiring someone more junior. It was weird to have a senior recruiter reach out on LinkedIn just to change their mind later. The company felt like a scam and the process was even more ridiculous.
- Can you tell me about your experience overseeing M&A transactions, including the process you followed?
Director
Scheduling the interview was straightforward via LinkedIn. However, when the scheduled interview time arrived, I didn't receive a call. I sent a polite message to see if we should reschedule and promptly got a call. The recruiter seemed friendly but was clearly unprepared: they weren't at their computer, asked me what role I was applying for, and were in the process of walking to their computer and logging in while I answered some initial questions. While I understand that unforeseen issues can arise, this interaction felt quite unprofessional. If a candidate acted this way during an interview, they would definitely be marked down.
- Tell me about your experience with marketing agencies.
Designer
The interview process was pretty easy, mostly just talking about my work history. There were no presentations or anything like that. However, a red flag was that they use spec work for hire, meaning you have to do an assignment. My experience has taught me that any place that uses an assignment for hire consideration is usually a terrible place to work. It suggests they're primarily focused on output and don't really value reviewing your portfolio. It's the kind of company where you need to be a good fit for them, not the other way around.
- Can you share a challenge you encountered during your career?
Paid Social Specialist
Applied online and a connection sent my resume to HR. Had a 30 min call with HR about my background and the role. She set up a call with the department head a few days later. That 30 min call was mostly behavioral questions about marketing and agency success. The next week, I had an hour long Skype call with 3 team members since I was out of state. They asked about my background, more behavioral questions, and some technical questions about Facebook marketing and the consumer purchase funnel. It was a good experience, everyone was nice. Didn't get an offer because of timing.
- What is it you like about social media marketing?
- Can you share an instance of handling a frustrated client and your approach?
- In what ways would your boss characterize you? What about your coworkers? And your friends?
