The interview process at this company was very easy, in person, quick and efficient. Got to the point and went fast. No complaints or bad reviews for the process.

I applied for a job and got an interview setup in under a week. The office was really small and a bit messy when I got there. The director interviewed me, looking for someone to help with an editorial turnaround. The role seemed to mostly involve managing their social media. The pay was a bit lower than typical for an EA, and it was a fast-paced place, even handling content for other cities. I got a take-home edit test that I had to finish within two days. Communication was a bit off, with the director emailing me late in the day to schedule calls for that night or the next morning, which wasn't ideal for normal work hours. I replied the next afternoon and then didn't hear back. The lack of communication made me think about the long hours expected of an employee.

I found an ad for an editorial assistant on Mediabistro and applied. They emailed me back the same day offering an interview. The next week I drove 1.5 hours to their office in SoHo for a one-on-one. I think I did okay, maybe a 5/10, since a couple of my answers were pretty bad. After the interview, the person gave me an editing and fact-checking test to do over the next three days. I took my time on it, made sure it was perfect, and sent it to the editor. A week later, she thanked me and said she'd decide that week and let me know. The week passed, and I heard nothing. I waited another week and then followed up with the editor asking about her decision, but I never heard back. It felt a bit unprofessional not to at least tell me someone else got the job, especially after I took the time to research the company, travel for the interview, and complete their assignment. It gave me a bad vibe about the magazine and the workplace.

The phone interview was mostly the publisher talking. They didn't know anything about me other than my resume. The only question they asked was if I would work "24/7" for them. It gave me a hint about what the job would be like, but I didn't realize it then.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • In all my years in business, this was the most inept, insulting job interview.
