Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Hartwick College.
Admissions Director
I got a call from someone on the hiring committee in mid-July. The first interview was with a Director. It was an online Zoom meeting, and she didn't use a live video, just a picture. This first round was only about 15 minutes and had about 3 questions. They asked me for a second interview right away. The next week, I met with the admissions team via Zoom. Only two people had live video out of about 8. Some had pictures or just a black screen. I thought it was unprofessional for people, especially a future boss, to not use live video in an interview. I also had to give a 5-7 minute presentation on a topic I chose. I didn't feel like they were really invested in finding a good candidate, and their lack of passion was off-putting. I was told I'd hear back the next week, but it's been a month with no updates. In this job market, companies should be more upfront about candidate status to save everyone time.
- Regarding your application to Hartwick College, what prompted you to apply?
Adjunct Instructor
It was pretty simple. I talked to two professors who asked me some questions about teaching. After that, we discussed the schedule for the semester.
- Describe your teaching methodology.
- Could you list the courses you have previously instructed?
- What teaching materials or books have you utilized in your past courses?
Tour Guide
The interview was conducted by a panel consisting of admissions counselors and a student tour guide. They assessed my professionalism, career aspirations, and resume. They also tested my ability to think quickly and spontaneously. Additionally, I was asked to engage in an impromptu sales pitch. Dressing professionally was emphasized as important, as tour guides are expected to maintain a certain dress code during open houses, avoiding overly casual attire that might be acceptable for other students on campus.
