First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Harry N. Abrams.
Junior Consultant
I had 3 technical interviews where we discussed the API script for Node.js in the backend dev of an app that could do a CRUD app with a database structure. After that, I met with the CEO to go over the app's database and check its data structure compliance with the ISO 3736 standard. It was good.
- How many years do you expect to be in this league?
Sales Assistant
So the HR rep was really nice and said a lot of good things, making me feel like I was the top choice, although I figured that was just to get me interested. I had an interview that went really well. One of the hiring managers said something about how 'if you're getting yelled at, it's nothing personal. Everything is business here', which was a bit jarring. I thought I had a good shot at an offer since it seemed to go so well, but then I was ghosted with no follow-up at all. It's strange for a company that seems so professional. I was actually going to try and negotiate the offer, so I'm glad I saw another review about their experience, it saved me from potential heartbreak.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
Associate Editor
I applied online and then got an email for a phone interview the next day. It was quick, and then I went into the office the next week for an in-person interview. The hiring manager asked me questions, but I felt like they kept cutting me off before I could finish my answers. HR told me I was one of the best candidates. They asked for writing samples and mentioned they would make a decision soon. I followed up three weeks later, and they said they were still interviewing and would be in touch. It's been almost three months, and I still haven't heard back.
- What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
- Could you share some of your writing samples?
Publishing Assistant
I got an interview scheduled via email. I went in for it, and it was with the marketing/publicity assistant who I would be reporting to. We talked about my experience, why I was interested in the job, publishing, and children's/YA specifically. It felt pretty conversational and nice overall. I sent a thank you email, but then had to wait two weeks and follow up to hear back.
