First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Harmonix Music Systems.
Software Engineer
The interview process started with a 30-minute phone interview that was mostly behavioral, but ended with an easy data structures question. Then there was a coding challenge to check coding style and thought process. After that, there were 2 on-site rounds: one behavioral focusing on projects and interests, and one technical with a medium/hard coding practices question. It seems like there's a background check and an offer stage too.
- Can you tell me about your projects?
- What are your interests?
- Data structures question (EASY)
Artist
I got my name in with an employee referral. A few days later, a producer from Harmonix contacted me about the job. After a quick prescreening, I was invited to the next round of interviews, where I was skyped into an interview with a group of team members. We discussed my qualifications for the role and what the position entailed. Following that, I had one more phone interview with the producer before an offer was extended.
- Can you discuss your past experiences?
- Describe your approach to resolving problems.
Senior Artist
the process had a 4-5 hour long session with managers and coworkers from different departments. it had several sessions, each 30-60 minutes long with 1-4 people.

Director
The interview process for Director was quite extensive, but I liked that they took the time to make sure they found the right person. It included 5 rounds in total, starting with a phone interview, followed by 4 in-person interviews. One of the rounds was a group interview where I met the whole team I would be managing.
- Tell me about a project you led that failed badly. What were the reasons for the failure? What lessons did you take away from it? How would you approach that same project if you had to do it again?
