Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at HackerRank.
Software Development Engineer
The interview process had two main rounds. Round 1 was an online assessment on Hackerrank where I had to debug and fix bugs in two problems, and then create a feature with discount coupons, including writing logic and passing 4 test cases. An AI assistant bot was available. Round 2 involved debugging and building features within a given codebase, also with an AI assistant. However, their IDE was lagging and the 45 minutes allotted for the round felt insufficient.
No confirmed questions were included in this interview report.
Software Engineer Intern
I had a really cool interview with HackerRank, super project-focused. First up was a technical round with the CTO & Co-founder, then another with the Director of Engineering. We mostly talked about my Projects, which was nice because I got to really go into detail about them, like for the first time ever in an interview. They seemed really into what I'd done. Just so you know, they're big on stuff outside of classes like hackathons and open-source. Didn't get the offer, but it was a great learning experience!
- Could you walk me through your projects?
- Tell me about the challenges you faced in your projects.
- Explain the rationale behind your technical choices for your projects.
Software Engineer
The interview process was okay, but there were issues with last-minute rescheduling. My interview was rescheduled twice right before the original time, and I wasn't consulted on the new times. Then, halfway through the full-loop, my interviews were canceled without any notice or explanation. The HR person mentioned they were moving forward with other candidates, but only after the next day, which felt like a waste of my time. Overall, the people I interacted with were good, but the recruiter was very disorganized.
- How would you architect a real-time chat application?
