Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gusto.
Product Designer
The process was okay, it started with a recruiter screener, then a portfolio review with the hiring manager, followed by a panel interview with four people covering values alignment, cross-functional collaboration, a deep dive into my portfolio, and finally an interview with the hiring manager. It was all pretty organized, professional, and transparent, though I didn't get an offer and they just said they went with other candidates without any useful feedback.
- Can you share an instance where you faced challenges in achieving team alignment?
- What potential reasons might lead you to leave this role within the first year?
Product Designer
It was a basic product design interview. First, there was a recruiter screen, then a portfolio presentation to the hiring manager. After that, it was a virtual on-site, which included a behavioral interview with a product leader, another portfolio presentation to 3 senior/staff designers, a cultural/values alignment interview, and a final interview with the hiring manager. Everyone I met at Gusto was nice, thoughtful, and seemed like people I'd enjoy working with. It's clear they prioritize people and culture. I'd definitely consider applying for roles at Gusto again.
- Can you share a time you encountered challenges with a team or product during a project, how you handled it, and what you learned from the experience?
Product Designer
The interview process was good overall. After the portfolio review, I asked the recruiter for feedback, but they said they weren't able to provide it. It's pretty funny, honestly, coming from a company that focuses on people and HR solutions, that they can't give some basic feedback to a candidate after a review. This is a really simple thing that could be super helpful for someone looking for a job. You can't really market HR solutions if you're not considering the candidate experience.
- Tell me about the work you presented.
- Can you elaborate on the projects I saw in your portfolio?
- Walk me through your design process for the pieces you shared.
