First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gusto.
Accountant
So for accountant roles, first you do a phone screen, usually with the hiring manager. Then you get a homework assignment. It can differ based on the team and level. The final part is one round of interviews. I had four separate interviews: three with people from Accounting and one with someone from a different department. After that, they do reference checks, and then they extend an offer.
- What are the interview focus areas?
- Will there be technical questions about accounting for specific transactions?
- Could you explain the accounting concepts behind your current work?
Accounts Assistant
It was a long phone call that felt a bit pressured. Instead of testing knowledge and ability, they talked a lot about the company and asked me many questions about how I could fit the job.
- They asked many questions about me and my fit for the role.
- They asked many questions about the company.
Payroll Specialist
The interview process was lengthy but ultimately rewarding. It commenced with a standard phone screening to assess my background and get acquainted. Following that, there was a unique take-home assignment. Since I wasn't local, I had several Google Hangouts interviews, which experienced some technical hiccups, but the recruiter was helpful throughout. These technical issues were a bit nerve-wracking. The interviews heavily emphasized cultural fit, about 80%, rather than specific skills. However, the role requires a certain level of ability and motivation to thrive in this environment.
- Can you describe a past situation where you resolved an issue that subsequently had a significant positive impact?
