First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gulfstream.
Industrial Designer
So, the interview process started with two phone interviews. After that, I had two rounds of onsite interviews. The first onsite interview was a presentation of my portfolio to about 10 employees. The second onsite interview was a skills test where I had to do a quick design and model based on a prompt they gave me.
- Could you describe your responsibilities in your past roles?
- Please detail your specific contributions to a group project within your portfolio.
Designer
First, I got a call saying the hiring manager was interested in me. Then, we set up a group phone interview, which I passed. After that, I was invited for an in-person group interview, and they paid for my travel expenses. I completed the interview and got an offer about a week later, which I accepted. They then gave me instructions for a drug test and background check, and I passed those too. I relocated, and then started work at Gulfstream.
- Can you share an instance where a colleague or classmate didn't meet expectations or finish a task, and explain how you handled it?
Interior Designer
I interviewed for the Interior Designer Level I role in Dallas back in May 2012. It started with HR reaching out to set up a phone chat with the Design Manager. During that call, I was expecting to talk to two other people, but they weren't available, so it ended up just being me and the manager. She asked me some basic stuff about my background and resume. After that, she said I'd be invited to Dallas for a panel interview, but warned it might take a few weeks since they were short-staffed. Sure enough, about three weeks later, HR called me back for the panel interview. This one had five people: the Design Manager, HR Manager, another Designer, and some Sales Execs. Each person asked me questions, mostly behavioral or job-specific, and it lasted about an hour. They told me if I made it to the final round, they'd contact me soon. A week later, I got another call to schedule my final interview with the Director of Design. I went in for what I thought was the final interview, but surprise, it was another panel, this time with the Director included. The questions were similar to the previous one, but the Director threw in some more general questions at the end. Overall, it was a good learning experience for an entry-level designer like me. I learned a lot from the panel questions and about the company, which is known as one of the best. The downsides were the wait times; after my final interview in early June, it took three weeks to hear anything back. I followed up weekly, and finally, in July, the Design Manager let me know I wasn't selected but gave me some constructive feedback. Also, I had to travel to Dallas twice for interviews and was told my mileage would be reimbursed. They only reimbursed me for one trip at the time, promising a check for the second. It's been three weeks since that conversation with the Design Manager, and I still haven't received that check.
- Can you share an experience where a decision you made didn't lead to the expected result, and what you learned from that situation?
