The interview process lasted about 3 weeks and was very straightforward — the interviewers were kind, considerate and communicative. It involved two rounds of interviews — one with a recruiter, one with a team member.

I did an online application and then had a telephone screen with HR-type questions. After that, there was a time-consuming and unpaid assignment. Even with my years of experience, they made me do the assignment and then didn't give me any feedback on it.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

The process started with a phone interview. Then, I had to quickly do an assignment: develop a full social media strategy for a new apartment complex, create social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) with images, write a blog post based on the strategy, and handle online reputation management by responding to negative reviews. After that, I had an in-person interview with the two founders, who were late. One founder was nice, but the other was rude and condescending, doing most of the talking and often looking at their computers. This founder seemed like they didn't want to be there and thought the job was beneath them. It seems they project a 'down-to-earth start-up' image but really want people to work for very little pay to create high-quality content. Following the in-person interview, I had to quickly fill out an application, undergo a background check, and complete a very long (52 pages) personality test. After submitting these, they contacted all my references and then sent a job offer that was half of my requested salary. I had asked for 50k, which is average for Los Angeles, but they sent a contract for 24k a year as a contractor with no guaranteed full-time employment. When I mentioned the workload seemed insane for that salary, they implied most people did that much work in 20 hours a week. The pay structure is per client, not per hour. If you get the Facebook/G+/Twitter package, you earn $140/month per client, with a maximum of 15 clients, meaning a potential maximum of $2100/month. The expectation is 15 Facebook posts and 15 tweets daily (or less, leading to even lower pay) within a 4-hour timeframe. This means each post needs to be done in under 8 minutes to be profitable, which is not their concern as they don't pay hourly. The HR rep is very nice and hides the rude founder's demeanor, making the job sound fun and exciting. The whole process indicated they are looking for extremely hard-working, passionate individuals willing to work for minimal compensation while feeling like they are part of something significant.
