I submitted a medium-length application and then had a phone interview. Following that, I went through 3 rounds of interviews with different people, including an executive director, school leaders, instructional and operational staff, teachers, students, and families.

Behavioral Presentation

The interview process moved pretty quickly. I got a phone interview just a few days after sending in my resume, and then had a demo lesson not too long after that. Everyone I met was really friendly. But, they were super vague about what they were looking for and what I should even be demoing. I had to ask a bunch of follow-up questions about the curriculum and student activities before the demo because they weren't clear. They also asked me really vague questions. Come to find out, they wanted someone to teach not just ENL, but also math and other subjects I'm not skilled in, which made me feel like I wasted my time preparing the demo and going in. I also noticed a lack of diversity in terms of people of color and older individuals on staff and in management. It seemed like a pretty disorganized place overall.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • How would you approach teaching math to a student who is a beginner in English?
  • Describe your method for instructing math to an English language learner at a basic level.

I had two Zoom calls with the recruitment team. The first one was with a current team leader and the recruiter. The second one was with those two, the Special Education Director, and a Social Studies Curriculum director. They asked me about my educational philosophy, my experience with behavior management, and my experience with Special Education processes. I also had time to ask them questions about their school and what the day-to-day is like, and they seemed to appreciate my questions.

I had two interviewers, one of whom seemed checked out. They basically read my resume back to me and asked a bunch of questions, most of which were pretty easy. I felt like I got the job offer during the interview itself.
