First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Groove Commerce.
Designer
My interview with Groove started with a phone screening where they looked over my background and work experience. I also got to ask some questions about Groove. It was pretty simple. After that, I was given a 24-hour assignment that involved brand research and concepting. Once I sent it in, I had an in-person interview. This one was more detailed and had several Groove employees there. They asked me about my background, my portfolio, my skills, and some design situations. Then, I presented my 24-hour assignment along with some extra design visuals. I also got to ask them more questions. The process wrapped up with me giving them my references and when I could start. It was a thorough process, but Groove kept me in the loop. They let me learn about the company as we went, which helped me really get who Groove is. I interviewed with people I'd actually work with, not just HR, which made me feel more comfortable. Their investment in the interview showed me they really wanted the right person for the job.

Account Manager
Got a call from an external HR company a day or two after applying online for an initial phone screen. This first call was pretty basic, mostly checking for a good phone presence. The HR person seemed to be reading from a script about Groove but couldn't answer most of my questions about the job or company. Then, I had to take an online MyersBriggs personality test. Before I finished that, I had an in-person interview at their new office in Fells Point. I interviewed with Mack, the VP, and a Senior Account Manager. The interview was pretty standard, mostly asking why I was leaving my current job and what made me interested in Groove. They said I'd hear back in a few weeks, but after following up by email and phone, I never got a response.
- What kind of work setting do you want to steer clear of?
SEO/Web Analytics Specialist
I first talked to an external HR person who didn't seem to know much about the company, making it tough to understand their work or office vibe. Still, I went for the in-person interview. It was a two-panel setup: one for technical questions and one for culture fit. The first panel was quick and informative, asking about my use of Google Analytics, contributions to a team, and problem-solving with tools. I asked them questions, but since they hadn't been there long, getting deep insights was hard, though they seemed knowledgeable in their areas. Then came the culture team, whose roles I wasn't sure of. They asked personality questions like 'what did you do during a situation when?' and 'how do you like to be managed?'. I ended up asking them more questions. Their motto is 'Work Hard, Play Hard,' typical agency talk about long hours balanced with after-work drinks. They offer a company Macbook Pro, which is nice, but their high spending is a bit concerning. They're opening a new office in a unique building, which they seem excited about. So, it's a standard agency experience with the usual 'work hard, play hard' vibe. Despite the seemingly fun atmosphere, the interview felt sterile, and I'm unsure if that reflects the actual culture.
- How do you prefer to be managed?
Digital Designer
I applied online in early January but didn't hear back for months. Then, about six months later, they emailed asking if I wanted to interview. I did it for practice. The interview was one-sided; they didn't ask about my skills for the role. Instead, they asked about me, my background, and why I wanted to work there. At the end, I asked many questions, but when I asked if they had any questions for me, they said no. I got rejected a few days later. Guess I wasn't "Groove" material.
- Can you tell me about yourself, your background, and your motivation for applying to this role?
