Research Associate
The interview journey kicked off with a chat with HR to go over my background, see if I was interested in the job, and check my general fit. The recruiter was really professional, giving me a clear rundown of the job and the company. The whole thing felt organized and moved along well. Overall, it was a good experience, though it felt pretty competitive.
- We started with an HR screening where we discussed my background, experience, and why I'm interested in the role. The recruiter also provided details about the team, the responsibilities involved, and what to expect regarding the next steps.
Manager
The interview questions were pretty standard. No deep dives, just top-level stuff, but they seemed to expect really specific answers. I felt like I had to guess what they wanted to hear. Didn't have my psychic abilities switched on that day! I really didn't vibe with the conversation and decided to pull out of the running.
- In what ways do you make sure the development team is building a high-quality architecture?
- What is your level of familiarity with ETL processes?
QA Lead
The interview process included an HR call, followed by a technical HackerRank test, and then a technical interview. Everything was conducted online. The technical test was quite challenging, focused on creating solutions, and was very data-specific. The technical interview went reasonably well, though perhaps I was too candid with some responses, which were mentioned in the rejection feedback. It seems they are new to QA work, so it would require significant effort to establish a proper QA process, posing a risk to the entire QA function. A major issue is their unclear expectations, leading them to search for ideal candidates.

Standard pre-screen happens first, like telling them about yourself, salary expectations, etc. They'll try to figure out your absolute walk-away number before you even understand the role or talk to the hiring manager. The process is: 1. pre-screen, 2. an uncompensated but time-intensive trial assignment where you'll analyze numbers in Excel and write sector commentary, 3. talk to the hiring manager, 4. talk to other team/senior managers. I don't do assessments before talking to the hiring manager about the specifics of the position, especially since they already have my writing samples and there are tons of applicants. So I won't move forward with Green Street, and that's fine. Their pay is only about half of market rate and their editorial quality isn't great. It's basically a place to work while finishing your CFA.
- Can you tell me about yourself and what makes you interested in Green Street? Also, what are your salary expectations, and all the usual pre-screen questions.
- What are your salary expectations?
- What is your absolute walk-away number?
