& Process

It was an in-person interview with several people. It started with HR and then moved to a person in the business. We're trying to preemptively discuss culture since they get rated so bad on it.

I had an initial phone screen with the HR manager, who did a good job of presenting the company. The job description seemed interesting, but I was concerned because the salary offered was more than 50% lower than what I was looking for. Nevertheless, the HR manager thought my qualifications were a good fit and suggested I come in for an interview with the hiring manager. Sadly, the hiring manager was sick on the day of the interview, and I had already arrived before the meeting could be rescheduled. I ended up interviewing with the HR manager and an engineer, both of whom were very professional. I brought up the low Glassdoor ratings, and they acknowledged they were aware of them. They mentioned recent changes, like a new location, which they believe have addressed some of the issues. I felt these issues weren't unusual for a small to medium-sized, family-owned business that's still developing its leadership. It was a productive conversation. In the end, we couldn't come to an agreement on salary, so no offer was extended.

We started with talking about myself and the position. I was really worried coming into the interview based on other glassdoor reviews but the guy doing the interview was pretty awesome and he helped me relax. I actually enjoyed the interview. We talked some more then we went over my code I brought in. The interviewer mainly asked questions about why I coded things the way I did, nothing too hard. We ended up just talking about tech for a while which was fun. We then worked on a code puzzle together which he called pair programming. It was actually nice to code and work with someone rather than do a test in a quite and awkward room. It felt more like an environment I would actually be working in and not school. We didn't finish the puzzle but he assured me that that wasn't the point. Definitely one of the best interview experiences I've had. He made things fun and relaxed and I even learned some stuff from him. He even took the time to explain and help me understand a javascript concept I had trouble with during the interview. He really cares about helping others and it showed through the process.

So the first interview was a programming test. I started with a quick written test about basic OO programming stuff. Then I had to do a small coding project where I had to read from a database using ADO.Net and then change and sort the data I got. The second interview was with three of the developers and we talked about how to process XML data and also about MVC.
