Learning Coach
Started with a phone call, then went in person to the center. I got to watch students and a coach at a table to see what teaching is like there and what methods to use.
- How do you keep kids interested and wanting to do homework at the table?
Calculus Tutor
We started off with an initial phone call to check my availability. Then I met with the owner. We reviewed my resume and talked about my professional experience. I learned about GradePower's cognitive approach.
- What would you do if a student was having trouble understanding a concept?
Director
I went through a lot of steps for this job. First, there was an hour-long phone screener, then a two-hour formal phone interview. After that, I had a two-hour meet-and-greet with a local owner from a different location. This was followed by a three-hour in-person interview with the main owner. They also checked with four of my references. Finally, there was a two-hour personality test. They basically told me I had the job after all that, but then two days later they said I didn't get it because someone less qualified but more connected got it. It was a waste of my time and money. To top it off, the owner wanted to contact my current boss as a reference, which I wasn't comfortable with unless there was a job offer. I realized if I hadn't said something, they might have put my current job at risk without any intention of hiring me.
- What's your strategy for handling a parent who wishes to disenroll their student from tutoring services?
Instructor
I had an initial phone screen on Zoom where we discussed the role and pay, and they asked about my teaching experience. I was then invited for an in-person interview at the center, which mostly involved questions about my interests. Following that, I observed an hour-long session with an experienced coach. The next day, I received an offer and started the training.
- What do you like most about Austin?
- Could you share your proudest accomplishment?
