Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Government of Ontario, Canada.
Project Assistant
I applied online and got an email with an interview date 3 weeks later. The interview was a casual panel interview, very friendly and conversational. It was scheduled for 2 days after receiving the email. I got confirmation that I was the successful candidate 1 day after the interview. Make sure to know about your specific ministry! Behavioural and situational questions were asked.
- How would you prioritize tasks when faced with limited time and competing deadlines?
Project Manager
A phone call was followed by an email with interview details. The interview consisted of a 30-minute case study, followed by a 5-question interview process that concluded with a case study presentation.
- When working on the case study, make sure to document all your assumptions, as this will help with explanations and managing expectations.
- Can you describe a major, critical project you managed, detailing its budget, schedule, and the number of stakeholders, vendors, or direct reports involved?
Project Manager
The interview started with 30 minutes to prepare a presentation about being a new project manager on a project with vendor and people issues. This project is critical as other projects depend on its completion. The staff is overworked and resistant to the new PM, but the delivery time is firm. The presentation was for the review board/leadership. After the prep time, I was given a list of questions to answer and write notes for. This part of the interview had a 2-person panel. They were focused on writing down situational and behavioral questions, not making eye contact.
- Can you describe a project you managed from beginning to end, including its budget, team size, tools used, and whether it was delivered on time, within budget, and scope? If not, what steps did you take to address any deviations?
- What project management tools do you utilize, and what makes you consider them effective?
- Describe a time when your manager asked you to overlook an issue. What actions did you take in response?
