First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
Account Manager
I'd always wanted to work for this ad agency, knowing all their award-winning campaigns and the insights behind them. However, the interview process really made me reconsider. I first got connected to the NY office, then had an informational interview with someone who referred me to HR in SF. The SF HR rep was flaky with cancellations, so that conversation ended. Five months later, I reconnected with the same HR rep in SF, having gained more experience. She was interested, and we had a good informational interview. About a month later, she reached out about a job opening and I was flown out to SF. I had seven interviews over two days with two account teams. Despite some changes in meeting times, all interviews happened. The people seemed nice, but I had some reservations about the office and city vibe. I sent a thank you note and asked about next steps. A week passed with no response, so I followed up again. Still nothing, so I followed up a third time. After another week (four weeks total), I finally heard they chose another candidate. If they had given me an update within the first two weeks, I would have been fine. But being strung along for a month with no word really made me lose respect for their HR process. Not something I want to experience again.
- Can you evaluate your supervisor's decisions regarding the campaign's direction after discussing some of your previous work?
Account Manager
I got in through a friend who works there. Apparently, they don't really consider random applications because they prioritize culture fit (like the 'beer test') and a strong agency background, which is good. I first spoke with the recruiting manager, and she really grilled me with lots of good questions about why I left past jobs and my digital experience. Then, a few weeks later, I interviewed with account directors and a group account director. Overall, it was a positive interview experience, and everyone was friendly.
- What prompted your departure from your last position?
- Can you confirm you're current with the newest developments in digital and mobile technologies?
Account Manager
I found the interview process to be pretty easy and straightforward. There were four interviews in total before they extended an offer. I got through two video interviews, but then they decided to go with someone else. The first interview was with the recruiting lead, who was super helpful and really went out of their way to answer my questions and keep me in the loop.
- Before you start working on a client's advertising campaign, what questions do you need answered?
- Do you tend to focus on the big picture, the details, or both?
