First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Global Power Components.
Design Automation Engineer
The whole thing was on-site, not sure if this is normal for them. It started with a pen & paper test on CAD and Engineering Principles. Then there was a Solidworks assignment for solid modeling and assembly. Finally, a verbal interview with the engineering manager.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- Please complete this pen & paper test covering CAD and Engineering Principles.
- Complete this Solidworks solid modeling and assembly assignment.
Engineer
Expect some weirdness. They'll make you fill out a paper application on site, even if you already did one online. They also give you a bunch of tests before they even talk to you. Making engineers do a simple math test is a huge waste of time. Honestly, this interview process makes you not want to go back.
- Are you able to complete a CAD test?
Fabrication Supervisor
Went through a math test, then a really long interview that didn't really cover the actual job. It was for a position that didn't even exist, so I was basically told and offered the job I was looking for. I was hired due to my experience and ended up programming and running machines.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment with us?
Mechanical Engineer Designer
So I had this HR person who was just not good. First call was just basic stuff, like who I am, what I wanted, and what the company does and what I'd be doing. Then I went in for a second interview at their place. They had me do a SolidWorks assessment and take four tests on mechanical comprehension, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD. After that, I sat with the HR guy, got a tour, and he said he'd let me know by the end of the week if I got the job. Didn't hear anything, so he told me he'd let me know Monday. Still nothing Monday or Tuesday, and finally Wednesday he got back to me. He had me come in for another interview with the owner. We chatted about my hobbies and my five-year plan, then he talked about what I'd need to learn about their product and system to improve their designs. After that, I met with HR again to talk about my salary, benefits, and vacation time. They told me to think it over the weekend and get back to them. I called Monday and accepted, and the HR guy was super excited, saying it was a great fit and a good start for my career. I asked if they needed anything else, and he said he'd call the next day with info for the drug test needed before I start. So I thought I had the job, was excited to start the next week, told my current employer I was done, and waited for the next steps. But nope, the next day, no call from HR. Another day passes, HR says they were busy and would follow up the next day. Two more days go by, and I get an email saying they're no longer considering me. Crazy, I thought I'd accepted the offer, we talked salary, benefits, and start date. If this is how they do business, I'm glad I didn't waste more time here. Super unprofessional.
- It was a relaxed interview, and they wanted to know more about you as an individual.
