First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at GLAAD.
Director
I interviewed with 3 senior staff members and then spoke with an external recruiter. After that, I was ghosted. I reached out again to show my continued interest, and they replied, inviting me for another interview. I ended up declining that interview though. The interview experience and the questions I was asked made me even more sure that this organization's relevance has long passed. It used to be a media watchdog back in the 80s and 90s, but now it seems to be trying to do a bit of everything without a clear strategy.
- What are your thoughts on the current state of the LGBTQIA+ community?
Intern
I sent in my resume and cover letter, and then about a month later, I got an email for an interview. The senior strategist interviewed me. I thought I'd feel more passionate about this, but the interview was super cold. The job I applied for was described totally differently than what they asked me about. All she cared about was my PR experience, even though the job was online as research and report based. It was a really dull and awkward phone interview, which is not usually my experience. I'll still be involved with GLAAD, but this interview made me not want to intern there.
- What kind of media have you been engaging with recently?
Communications/PR Specialist
I applied by emailing my cover letter and resume. They got back to me about three days later and invited me for an in-person interview at their New York office. It was a pretty quick chat with a mix of behavioral and experiential questions. They actually offered me the job right then and there! It felt very informal and casual, which I guess fits GLAAD's culture.
- What do you see yourself doing in the future?
- What's your motivation for wanting to join GLAAD?
- Could you tell me more about your background concerning this position?
Director of Communications
The interview process included a phone screening and an in-person interview. Even though the experience was really positive and they said I'd hear back, the organization didn't provide any updates about my application, their search, or what's next. I never got any updates or even a rejection, just silence, and it's been over a month since the in-person interview. It feels super unprofessional.
- What would be your approach to developing GLAAD's public position or response regarding a current LGBTQ news topic?
