Development Manager
I interacted with a recruiting firm that was quite disorganized. While I was applying for multiple positions, the difference in quality really stood out. I went through a few interview stages, and with each one, it became more apparent that this wasn't the right fit for me.
- Can you tell me about your fundraising experience?
Senior Manager
The hiring process was awful. I was emailed an offer, and the hiring manager said I'd get the formal offer letter in 48 hours. A week passed, and the hiring manager stopped responding. It was a red flag that they were so inconsiderate, especially since I had other job offers. It was disgraceful not to get an offer letter after they verbally accepted me. The hiring manager also 'forgot' to respond to my availability for an interview until 2 days after the requested day, asking if I could meet in under 2 hours. HR wasn't a contact throughout the process. After I followed up a third time, I got a short email saying they weren't moving forward, with no explanation or apology. The whole experience was terrible. The hiring team and CEO's actions reflect their character. Their stated values like 'Integrity, Accountability and Respect' seem to be just words because this team and its leadership don't show them. This is a competitive market, and good candidates have choices. It's a two-way interview. I really question the company's integrity and morals because they clearly don't act with integrity, accountability, or respect. I found out more about the LA council and saw many Glassdoor reviews about the CEO's racism, bullying, and 'worst job' reports. My experience isn't unique; it's a pattern in their hiring. I'm glad I dodged this bullet. I strongly advise candidates to look at other non-profits that are mature, follow best practices, hold their leadership accountable to their values, and take their mission seriously. To donors: there are better organizations to support that are actually committed to change, not just performative DEI efforts that hide a racist culture centered on whiteness and a majority white staff, even in a diverse city.
- Can you share more about your background?
Diversity Manager
I had an initial phone call with the HR coordinator that lasted about an hour. They asked some preliminary questions about cultural competency and what my 10, 30, 60 day plans would be if I got the job. After that, there was a panel interview with two directors and an hourly employee. They each took turns asking me questions. It was pretty conversational and relaxed, and the interview lasted about an hour and a half.
- Can you explain what cultural competency means to you?
- Regarding a 10, 30, 60 day plan, what would you implement if offered the role?
