First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gibson Homewares.
Key Account Manager
I had a quick initial chat and then got set up for an in-person interview. I also completed a personality assessment and a time-related questionnaire. Following that, I met with two HR folks and a manager, which was a really nice interaction. After that, I had a meeting with the CEO. The CEO wasn't the most welcoming person. I tried to shake his hand, but he didn't offer his. For the first 10 minutes, he just read my resume and drank his tea without even looking at me. He even took a phone call during that time. Then he asked me some random questions that didn't seem related to the job. Meeting him wasn't a great experience.
- Could you tell me about your current responsibilities and role?
Accountant
I had to fill out a bunch of questions on a form with a time limit. After that, I spoke with the recruiter who asked me some questions. They also took me on a tour of the company departments and showed me where they keep their dinner sets. What I didn't like was that the interview was supposed to be with the recruiter and one of the owners, but the recruiter said the owner was too busy. During the tour, the employees seemed rude or unhappy, looking worried and glued to their computers, which made the place feel tense and not like a happy workplace. The recruiter's questions felt like they were trying to get under my skin, and one question seemed immature and the recruiter was acting cocky. The overall company environment felt strange and unpleasant.
- Did anyone at your last job think you were conceited?
Marketing Copywriter
I was told to set aside at least a couple of hours to meet with several managers and executives, but only one of the interviewers was ready at the scheduled date and time. I had to make two additional trips (requiring taking additional days off) to meet with interviewers who couldn't make the time to meet with me for the first scheduled interview. The HR interviewer asked me about my race/nationality, so I decided then not to pursue the opportunity.
- I know I shouldn't ask, but what is your nationality, given that your last name doesn't sound Chinese?
Project Coordinator
After submitting an online application, the interview process involved an on-site meeting with HR and then the VP. This followed the completion of a complex application questionnaire. The staff and reception were very friendly. The conversation was comfortable and consisted of standard questions. The entire process lasted about an hour and wasn't overly difficult. The location was also nice.
- Can you describe your previous work experience?
