First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Generation Citizen.
Operations Coordinator
There were several rounds of phone screens and interviews. They communicated clearly throughout. The questions asked were pretty standard and felt reasonable, nothing overly difficult or unusual. I'd describe the interviewers as kind and good communicators.
- What would you consider your greatest strength and your biggest weakness?
Program Associate
It was a 3-round interview process: a phone screening, a secondary interview with two staff members, and a final interview with managers. Communication was pretty bad. They only gave one option for the phone screening, which I couldn't do because of a funeral. I had to send three emails and explain my situation for them to reschedule. Then, for the in-person interviews, they had me do a lot of work for them. After preparing for weeks, including a three-month work plan and presentation, they acted like they'd already hired someone. They also took over a month to tell me I didn't get the job, saying my experience wasn't a good fit, which made me wonder why they put me through so much. It felt disrespectful, and honestly, I'm glad it didn't work out.
- What kind of projects would GC students be interested in, and how would you support their political campaigns?
Program Manager
I applied online and soon after heard back from the local Austin manager for a phone interview. It went really well. They said I was being considered for two roles and invited me back for a video interview with the same manager and some NYC leadership. That went well too and they said they would be in touch. I sent a thank you email after, but after not hearing anything for a while, I sent a follow-up and never got a response. It's fine if I didn't get the job, but I don't think it's acceptable to not even send a quick email saying it was filled, especially after going through multiple interviews. It shows a lack of respect and professionalism.
- No difficult or unexpected questions were asked.
Special Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer
The whole process took about 5 weeks. It started with a 30-minute phone interview, then I had to complete a work sample with 2 exercises which took around 2 hours. After that, there was a 1-hour video interview with the President and the Communications Manager. It was a bit weird to not hear back for three weeks after the video interview, but when I followed up, the hiring manager replied within two days to let me know I wasn't selected to move forward. The people I met were great and the organization's mission is amazing, but the three-week silence was a bit odd and made me wonder if their hiring processes are a bit weak or if they lack the capacity to manage them effectively. Besides that last bit of silence, the process was pretty quick. They were hiring for this role in October 2021 with a salary range of 55k to 70k.
