Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at General Motors (GM).
Information Technology
The interview process involved two main stages. First, there were coding challenges. After that, a virtual interview was conducted. This virtual interview included an introduction, questions about your motivation for applying to this specific role and company, and then about 6 behavioral questions, with 3 coming from each manager. These questions mainly focused on how you handle challenges. They also encouraged mentioning relevant projects. If you didn't bring up relevant projects, they would guide you towards that. After answering behavioral questions, they would probe deeper based on your responses, aiming to understand your experience better. The specific follow-up questions varied for each candidate based on their background.
- What motivates you to apply for this position at our company?

I got referred for this entry-level IT job at GM and right away I got a HireVue coding test. A couple weeks later, after I finished that, they set up a 15-minute phone screen. Then, the next week, I had a 2-hour Teams interview with two managers. It was mostly behavioral questions, like STAR method stuff, but they also asked about my past projects. After they finished their questions, I got to ask about the job and GM. They said I'd hear back in two weeks, and I got a verbal offer about a week after the interview.

So after you apply, GM sends you a Hirevue with some STAR questions. Then there's a coding test with a few easy/medium problems. After a few weeks of waiting, I had a phone interview to talk about roles and locations. Then, about a week later, I interviewed with two managers who asked more STAR questions. The process itself was pretty good up until that last interview. Everyone was super nice and seemed to care. But it's been a month since that interview and I've heard nothing. I've called the recruiter a bunch of times and no answer. Even though one interviewer said we'd be lucky to have me, I'm being ghosted. I don't know if I'll get an offer, and I'd be really confused if I don't. Overall, it's a good experience with maybe more STAR questions than I'd prefer, but they're fair. BUT PLEASE, improve communication after the final interview. Spending hours preparing and interviewing only to have your calls and emails ignored feels like a slap in the face. I don't even need a yes/no, just to know if I'm still being considered. That's my main issue, and it's a big one. GM is still hiring for the same job, so why not follow up with people who've already interviewed? I know I'm not the only one feeling this way, and hopefully this highlights the inconsistent nature of their interview process.
- Can you share an instance of working with someone challenging and how you handled it?
