First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at General Dynamics NASSCO.
Production Associate
The interview process involved general leadership and behavioral questions. These questions focused on core competencies like communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, decision-making, accountability, adaptability, initiative, and time management. They also asked for examples from past experiences to show professionalism, integrity, and results.
- Can you discuss a leadership role you had and how you managed it?
Logistics Technician
The interview process was pretty standard, however, the HR department seemed a bit disorganized. When I arrived for my meeting with the hiring manager or director, there were issues with my paperwork, which I thought should have been handled beforehand. After they eventually met with me, I learned the job was located in an industrial shipyard, not in an office as I had initially understood. The office space itself was well-designed, unlike the typical cubicle environments found in many defense companies.
- What areas do you believe you need to work on for professional development?
Software Engineer
I talked to the recruiter a lot, way more than the hiring manager, and honestly, both felt really unprofessional. The recruiter was super pushy, saying I was basically hired and they'd even cover relocation because they needed someone so bad and my background was perfect. I spent over a week with the recruiter, even turning down other work. Then I met the hiring manager, and it was quick, rude, and a total waste of time. Turns out he's rejected 23 people before. It seems like he's actively not hiring despite being told to, which says a lot about the IT department's vibe. There's a clear conflict between management and him, and it messes things up for everyone, especially me after dedicating over a week and losing out on contracting gigs. I'm not sure who let me down more, the recruiter or the hiring manager. It was a definite no even before I applied. This guy isn't hiring anyone, and the interview was just him asking about my resume, being snide about the 'numbers' which felt like he's biased against more experienced or knowledgeable people. Seriously, don't bother applying. They're not hiring. It looks like a power struggle with the hiring manager, and getting caught in it is a huge time sink. I've got 20+ years of experience and was promised relocation, but he's turned down 23 others and will probably reject anyone else too.
- So, you go through my resume, pick a point, and then ask a tricky question to find a reason to say no?
Accountant
The interview process was pretty smooth. I had a total of 5 interviews, with 3 people on the first day and 2 on the second. They were very clear that working there wouldn't count towards the public accounting hours needed for CPA certification. I think they thought I'd leave once I passed the CPA exams, but they might not realize that industry experience also counts as "general experience." It's a shame, but you win some and lose some.
- Can you share an example from your past, either in school or at work, where you showed leadership skills and describe how you managed that situation?
