General Dynamics Electric Boat Systems Engineer Interview Questions
& Process

There were 5 people total, me and 4 men. We went on a tour first, it was pretty cool. People working there seemed nice. We got split up for different departments. I talked to some people in my department while waiting, they seemed chill. My interviewer seemed unprepared and pulled out of a meeting, so he wasn't in a good mood. I was the only one with one interviewer instead of two. He was really rude and arrogant. Another guy interviewing for the same role had the same interviewer but with a second person, and was asked if a drug test would be a problem. I was interrogated with technical questions. Someone interviewing for a different role said their interviewers were nice and asked about morality since they make submarines for warfare. It was the worst interview, the interviewer wanted me, a college student, to feel inferior. The company seemed good overall and the others had positive experiences. This shouldn't reflect negatively on the company, but on that one interviewer. It's sketchy I didn't have two interviewers, as that's usually to ensure equal treatment.

I applied for 3 jobs at EB. Within a week, they rejected one of my applications. About two weeks later, I got a call and email to interview for the other two jobs. I had back-to-back phone interviews scheduled for about a week later, each lasting around 45 minutes. They started by asking me to talk about myself, covering my education, projects, and work experience. They asked follow-up questions if I missed something they wanted to hear about. They were really interested in how I work with others and handle unexpected problems. If I wasn't a recent grad, they wanted to know what I've been up to. Then they talked about their department and what they do. They gave me plenty of time for questions, and I appreciated how well my interviewers explained the job and the company. I had a few questions, and they answered them quickly and directly. The interview concluded then. One of the interviewers mentioned they'd check with HR about whether the next step was an in-person interview (due to COVID) or what the next step was. Surprisingly, within a week, I got an offer without any more interviews. They gave me a few days to consider and ask questions before accepting. All offers were conditional on passing a physical, drug test, and security clearance. You'll interview with the department head and maybe some other team members. It was a pretty relaxed and enjoyable interview process. They might ask about your hobbies, especially if they're related to cars or motorcycles, which is cool to connect on, but remember you're interviewing for a systems engineering job on submarines, not for a car company, so stay focused.

So, they had two phone interviews lined up. The first one was with the supervisor and a principal engineer about an open role. The second one was a follow-up with two engineers from the team. I got an offer a few weeks after all that.
