Customer Success Manager
What’s a disappointment and extremely unprofessional interview experience I had with Gem recently. Not only did I have multiple interviews, but they decided to reject me by an automatic email that was so robotic and inhumane. Damn, you should truly be ashamed of what you’re doing as recruiters to job seekers, especially in this market that is so difficult as you know. The recruiter answered my emails immediately while I was interviewing and once I didn’t get the position both him and the hiring manager completely ghosted me. They probably either hired someone internal or it didn’t hire anyone at all because they currently don’t have any active jobs which is part of the problem within this market. The hiring manager of the CSM team, you should be ashamed of how you handled yourself as well as the recruiter. I hope this is a learning lesson for your company and for its employees.
- How do you manage a client that is at risk of churning?
Customer Success Manager
I applied for a Customer Success Manager position on Gem's website. After a couple of weeks, a recruiter reached out to schedule an interview. I initially missed their emails because they went to spam, but the recruiter was very understanding and their follow-up felt thoughtful, which was the highlight of the experience. The hiring manager expressed excitement about my background, which was a great start. I felt I performed well and connected with the hiring manager personally. After the interview, I sent a thank-you email to the recruiter to forward to the hiring manager, mentioning additional qualifications and thanking them. The recruiter responded promptly and politely. Although I thought I did well, I received a generic rejection email from a different recruiter two days later, stating they couldn't disclose the reason. I followed up asking for more clarification, reiterating my interest and willingness to use feedback for future opportunities at Gem. I didn't receive a response. Considering I work in HRtech, I expected better feedback practices from Gem. I later researched Gem and found concerning information about internal DEIB issues impacting employee happiness and retention, making me feel like I might have avoided a negative situation.
- Could you detail your company's pricing structure?
- What can you tell me about upsell strategies?
- Please describe your company's pricing model and any upsell processes involved.
Customer Success Manager
I was referred into the team and after some chats with the VP of Sales, COO, and VP of Customer Success, the official process kicked off. First, I interviewed with the VP of Customer Success, answering competency questions and asking my own about the team and business vision. Next was a panel interview with CS and cross-functional leaders, which involved several short interviews over a few days, each focused on a specific competency. The final stage was a 30/60/90 day presentation. The interviewers were sharp and knew their stuff. I liked seeing how different teams at Gem interact. The recruiter was great, giving me time to prep and keeping me updated.
- Can you share an instance where you experienced failure?
