Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gates Foundation.
Program Coordinator
So, first I chatted with a recruiter, and then there were 3 more interviews with people higher up, one after another. They mentioned the interviews can be a bit strange because they have a set list of very specific questions they have to ask. It's mostly about how you deal with changes, take initiative, and adapt to different work environments. I made sure to ask them about the company culture and how I'd navigate working in a very complex organization where I'd have a lot of independence. They were happy to answer my questions, but they do keep a close eye on the time during the interviews.
- Tell me about a situation where you decided to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Can you give me the specifics?
Program Coordinator
The interview process was long, with two in-person interviews and one phone call. The last in-person interview was quite lengthy, about 3 hours, where I met with 4-5 different panels. They mostly asked the same questions. Some interviewers weren't very professional, and most of them held the same job title as the one I was applying for. There was only one senior person there, even though the role supports multiple senior project officers. It felt like the main goal of the interview was to see if my personality would 'fit in,' rather than focusing heavily on work experience.
- Can you tell me about the most challenging experience you faced in the past year?
Program Coordinator
It was a pretty simple interview process where I met with a few different people one-on-one. They asked some structured questions but mostly we just talked about my background and experience. Everyone was really nice and direct. The main bummer was the recruiter wasn't very communicative, and I think they switched recruiters midway through, so by the end, I wasn't even sure who to talk to.
- Could you describe your experience with managing relationships?
- What are the fundamental concepts of project management you know and have used?
