The interview process involved 5 different team members over 4 separate 1-hour meetings. It was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The conversations were straightforward, focusing on your experience and providing ample chances to ask questions.

The interview process was prolonged due to the team's heavy workload and travel schedules. I went through two phone interviews, followed by an all-day session and then a half-day session. It took about a month to receive the rejection notification. I found the people there very approachable. The organization seems to be transitioning from an academic environment to a more corporate one, focusing on speed and efficiency. This atmosphere felt quite different from my current for-profit role. Despite not getting the job, I am still very interested in future opportunities at the Foundation, as the compensation would have been better than my current salary.

I was really impressed with how I was treated throughout the interview process. They were so polite in all their emails, thanking me for even considering working with them. With the economy the way it is, and some people still looking for jobs, they made me feel like I was the one pursuing them. It started with a recruiter phone interview. The recruiter was lovely, and we had a great chat about my background and qualifications, covering the usual first interview topics. Towards the end, she talked about the salary and benefits, which was super helpful. I'd been at a for-profit for 14 years and honestly thought I'd get offered less, so I was genuinely surprised to learn I'd be making at least as much, if not more, at the Gates Foundation. Plus, the benefits are way better, and they even have a pension contribution that's just given to you, no strings attached about tenure or job level. After that, they set me up for a full day of interviews. Apparently, I was being considered for two different roles! I met with six people that day in a conference room. They were kind enough to let me pre-order lunch, but I was in that conference room the entire day with no breaks. Even lunch felt like an interview. I barely ate because it's so awkward to try and eat while being interviewed, and I definitely didn't want anything getting stuck in my teeth! I felt pretty confident about my chances after that marathon of interviews. I got positive feedback and felt like I did well. However, I did have two more interviews later on a Friday afternoon. These were to meet the director of the department and someone who would be my coworker, who wasn't available during the first round. Things went well again, and I figured I'd hear about the next steps the following week. I was absolutely stunned when the recruiter called my cell phone before I even got home. I called her back, and she extended a verbal job offer that Friday night at 6:30 PM! Everyone I interacted with was great, respectful, and complimentary. The only thing that gave me pause was some background research I did, and even current employees mentioned it during the interviews. They said it can be a tough place to work and get things done because it's still a relatively young company, still figuring out processes and organizational maturity. I can see that's true now that I'm here, but it's also exciting to be part of building that up. It has a bit of a startup vibe. People are really passionate and want to make a difference, both in the world through the Foundation's mission and within the company itself.
