First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gas South.
Analyst
It was a 3-round process. First, there was an online interview with video recording, where they asked some technical and behavioral questions, specifically probability questions. Then, I had an interview with someone from HR. Finally, there was a panel interview that included both technical and behavioral questions.
- Questions about expected value
- Technical interview questions using Excel
Analyst
Applied online. Six weeks after applying, HR reached out via email to set up an interview with the Senior and Lead Risk Analyst. Because the Senior Analyst was unavailable, HR filled in for the initial phone interview. This first interview with HR was primarily behavioral. The Lead Analyst conducted the next interview, which was supposed to be technical but was instead a case study. The case study was strange and didn't relate to commodities, risk analysis, the industry, or quantitative models. It focused on beer demand and popcorn sales at SunTrust Park, but they provided no data, numbers, or assumptions, just general questions like 'SunTrust park seats 40,000 people; what are you expected beer sales?' I received no guidance or additional information. It's questionable if this is an effective method for a quantitative interview for a risk analyst role. The Lead Analyst then asked, 'what would the function look like if you graphed total profit against price per bag of popcorn?' I responded, 'it would look like a concave quadratic function.' The Lead Risk Analyst then stated, 'I'm sorry, I don't know what that means, can you explain?' This interaction suggests potential issues within the company, particularly concerning the competence of their lead risk analyst in basic mathematical concepts.
- Given SunTrust park has a capacity of 40,000 people, what are your estimated beer sales?
- Could you describe the graphical representation of total profit versus the price per bag of popcorn?
Analyst
It started with a phone call from the manager looking for an analyst. Then another phone interview with the manager and a senior team member. After that, I went in person to meet with managers and directors (three of them). We talked about behavioral stuff, analytical skills, and Excel. I also gave a short presentation on an optimization business problem. After that interview, they gave me an offer.
- I was given a simple problem to solve in excel.
- I was asked a simple probability question.
