Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gartner.
Sales
The interview process involves several steps to check your background, motivation for the role, and how well you fit with the company. First, there's a phone screening. Then, the first round includes behavioral questions about problem-solving, adaptability, and sales skills, plus a quick sales role-play. The second round is a deeper dive with more behavioral questions and a longer, tougher sales role-play focusing on handling objections, structuring sales talks, and consultative selling. Finally, you'll have a chat with a senior manager about cultural fit, future potential, and any final questions before they decide.
- Can you describe the most challenging sales scenario you've faced?
Sales Representative
This was a really unprofessional interview experience, almost bizarre. The recruiter was hostile and rude from the start, and I don't think they really get sales. They focused too much on my older experiences, even from nearly 10 years ago and my childhood, instead of my current role which is very similar and for which I have 4 years of relevant experience. Every time I tried to discuss my current role and successes, they rudely interrupted, changed the subject to irrelevant things, and sometimes didn't even understand basic sales terms. They even said Gartner products are hard to sell and the sales team doesn't always make sales, which made me doubt their hiring ability. Their feedback was confusing; they wanted to hear about numbers and hitting targets, but cut me off when I tried to share those examples during the interview. It felt more like an interrogation than a professional interview. The recruiter was also on a power trip and seemed ignorant. They mentioned my role play was good but then didn't offer me the job for reasons that felt inaccurate and irrelevant. The vibe was off, disrespectful, and rude. I should have ended the call early.

- Can you discuss your early career experiences?
- What can you tell me about your childhood?
Sales
This interview process was kind of interesting. I had a lot of questions from the recruiters about how to do value selling. They seemed very specific about what they were looking for and needed c-level experience in selling. It didn't seem like they were interested in SaaS experienced sellers.
- Regarding your salary expectations, what are they?
