First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Game Closure.
Technical Recruiter
It all began with an email from the head recruiter. Then we had a phone interview. After that, it was an in-person coffee meeting for about 30 minutes. Then there was a follow-up call with the recruiter. After that, I had an in-person interview with a bunch of people, including the CEO and the founder. Following that, I had another chat with the recruiter to get feedback and see if I was still interested. Then there was a second in-person interview. Finally, there was a game of phone tag with the recruiter trying to follow up. The in-person interviews felt like they were run by people who were used to interviewing engineers.
- Can you teach me something, anything at all?
- Could you please write a job description for me to read?
- Let's have a debate. Choose a topic and try to convince me.
Game Engineer
It is fairly straightforward, A recruiter screen, 2 Technical screening and then probably on-site interview. I was so looking forward to this company. Company environment seems very cool. The team seems very energetic and overall vibe was so positive. Of all the rejects I received in my search, this was a little painful as I was so looking forward to joining them. I wish them good luck and hope to join them sometime in future. I answered all questions as per my knowledge. I, being a recent graduate did not have a lot of exposure to some of the very advanced JavaScript concepts but I sure showed them a promise and my ever learning attitude. People need to start believing in new grads a little though.
- Can you provide a deep dive into JavaScript?
- Can you provide a deep dive into Docker?
- Can you provide a deep dive into virtual machines?
Software Engineer
Applying here is a waste of time if you value work-life balance and reasonable hours. It began with a take-home project, about two days of work. I was told they'd improved from past issues, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Then, I had a technical interview focused on JavaScript performance details and an interview with a product person. Neither mentioned the take-home test. As things went on, I learned they expect very long work hours (around 60/week) and frequent weekend work. I couldn't get a clear answer on overtime and crunch, but it was high, though they said pay was high to compensate. They were interested after the first interviews, but when I asked about hours and work-life balance, the experience soured, and I was told they changed their mind after two weeks of no contact.
- How would you efficiently store a list of previous frames to display framerate?
Game Artist
After applying via Jobvite, I got an email from HR a couple months later to chat on the phone. Then, a week later, I had a video chat with the Art Director over gchat, but the sound was bad so we just talked on the phone. We talked about why I like video games, where I want to be in 5 years, and the company vibe. That same day, HR emailed me with an art test. I sent my art test back to HR and they said they'd let me know within a week. A couple weeks went by with no word. I emailed to check on my application status and a few days later, I got an email saying they went with other people.
- Could you provide 8 full color rough concepts for a mobile game, to be finished within 2 hours?
