Gaia Interview Questions
& Process

The recruiter called me out of the blue. I really don't know how they decide on candidates. They contacted me very quickly and the job opportunity seemed to disappear just as fast. The first recruiter seemed really enthusiastic about my application. He wanted to talk about my professional production experience and duties at previous jobs. The most interesting part was when we talked about spiritual beliefs, what series I enjoyed on Gaia, and also my own personal experiences with certain phenomena. He kept me on the phone for an hour, and we had a pretty deep and personal phone conversation. He was enthusiastic about having me come out to see the campus and meet the production team. He unsolicitedly told me that the bad reviews on Glassdoor were about other departments, not his. He then mentioned he just wanted me to talk to another producer before they arranged a visit. I told him I'd be driving a lot over the next couple days but would be happy to make time to chat. He arranged another phone interview the very next day. So another producer called me the next day. She seemed sort of sour and silent at the beginning, which was a stark contrast to the first interview. Unfortunately, she called right when I was driving through a mountainous area. The call dropped, and she called back sounding annoyed and curt, suggesting it might be best not to have a phone interview while driving. I mean, I was in the middle of traveling before, but I was willing to talk to his colleague if they wanted. He seemed eager to have me interview again, so I tried to be available. Maybe don't call me when I'm on an interstate road trip if you're so offended by conducting an interview while I'm on the road. Shoulder shrug.

It was a decent interview process, with intelligent questions. The interviewers were polite and respectful. The interview was done over the phone and about twelve questions were asked. These are typical questions that come up for guests being invited to come on shows. You should be honest about your life experiences and what has happened to you. The interviewers expect that people they interview be knowledgeable in what they are describing and how.

I got an email saying I made it to the next phase and was invited for an in-person interview. I met with a bunch of Gaia employees and they took me out to lunch. Then I met the camera person I'd be working with. My biggest frustration was never hearing back, even after I followed up a few weeks later. I get they have their own timeline, but it's a bummer not to be upfront about the decision and the process. I found out from someone else that they supposedly send out Gaia mugs if interviewees don't hear back after a while, but I never got an offer or a mug after 7 months. I see the position is no longer listed on their site, so they either didn't fill it or they did and didn't need to interview so many people, while other production jobs are still up.

The interview went great, I thought for sure there would be an offer, or at least a second interview. However, I was ghosted. No response to follow up questions, no rejection email, nothing. Getting ghosted is far worse than getting a NO. The Glassdoor ratings are poor, and they had a new CEO, so I was hoping things changed. I thought the company was semi-organized from the outside and maybe would be a great place to make an impact. Since I'm well qualified for the position and willing to work in-house, I can only assume there are two possible reasons for getting ghosted: discrimination or I wasn't a paying customer. They 'highly encourage' you to be a customer. In the application they ask which content you watch on their platform, which is a required field. This seems like a fair employment violation. Anyway, if you want to work here sign up a couple months before applying and watch some content so you at least have some stories to tell. Can't imagine they can fire you if you drop the subscription after starting work. Although, you're better off saving time and moving on.
