First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at FRONTSTEPS.
Customer Success Manager
I got in touch with FRONTSTEPS through a recruiter for the open Manager, Customer Role back in October 2020. After a pretty detailed phone interview with the recruiter, I moved on to a Zoom chat with the hiring manager, who was the COO. This interview was more of a discussion about the Customer Success field. The COO was open about where customer success stood at FRONTSTEPS and why they needed a Manager, Customer Success. After that, I had another round of Zoom interviews with the executive team. I spoke with each executive one-on-one, and they each shared their vision for FRONTSTEPS, its future, and how Customer Success fits into the plan. I was really impressed by how aligned and consistent the executives were in their messages. The process wrapped up with an offer and reference checks.
- What qualities are important to you when hiring a Customer Success Manager?
- Can you tell me which Star Wars or Marvel character you most identify with?
QA Engineer/Scrum Master
I got contacted within a week of applying and had a recruiter interview a few days later. It was a standard culture fit interview and went well enough to get a second interview. I got an email a couple days later with the time and was told I'd be meeting with the director of engineering the following Friday. Fast forward to Friday and I received no call for the interview. Four days, two unanswered emails, and an unanswered phone call later, I finally got in touch with the recruiter. I was told I was no longer a candidate for the position, they just didn't have the courtesy to notify me before, during, or after my scheduled interview date. Lack of, or rather dodging, communication is very unprofessional and left me with a sour taste. Moving offices and using a third party HR app is no excuse to neglect communication.
- What about this position caught your attention?
Director, Customer Support
The initial phone call with the recruiter was very professional, covering the basic expectations and salary ranges. The interview process was extensive, involving 10 hour-long Zoom meetings with executive team members, direct reports, and the hiring manager. The interviews felt natural and conversational. While each interviewer asked specific questions, three themes were consistent: 1) passion for their work, company vision, and values, 2) transparency and a commitment to educating me throughout, and 3) satisfaction with the people at FRONSTEPS. I appreciated how the hiring committee helped me assess my fit for the role and culture. I accepted the job, and the onboarding has been as attentive as the hiring process.
- Who would you be if you could choose to be a Starwars character, and what's your reasoning?
Product Owner
I had great conversations with the team members and the office space looked great. There wasn't a lot of urgency about being on time for the interviews, but the conversations were good once they started. They stressed that the organization is young and lacks structure, with a startup mentality where everyone helps out. I appreciated that honesty. That environment doesn't bother me, but it's not for everyone, and they were right to emphasize it. I got the sense the company is still figuring out its product strategy and moving as fast as possible.
- What's your recommendation for processing payments without using files?
- Given our product goals are due in December, how would you approach your first two months on the job?
