Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Friends of the Children.
Mentor
We had four rounds of interviews, and they asked relevant questions. They are really focused on finding the right person because with young people, you have to be careful about who you hire.
- Could you introduce yourself and explain your motivation for this role?
Mentor
Applied and a few weeks later got a phone interview, then a second interview. The company promised a response within a week, but after the second interview, which I felt went poorly due to the unprofessional panel, I had to follow up after two weeks to schedule the third round. The final interview went well and they asked for references, which I sent in. I was rejected 24 hours later despite them saying they were impressed with my experience. The whole process took over 6 weeks and was unprofessional with misleading promises.
- How would you handle a situation where a young person confides in you that they believe they are LGBTQ and are anxious about telling their family?
Mentor
Applied online and got called for an in-person interview, which was the first of two panel interviews. They asked about situational analysis, past experiences, and personal responses. They asked for references, and after I sent them a list, they said they'd be in touch within a week. A week later, I checked with my references, and they hadn't been contacted. This started a month-long email exchange asking about my application status and if they needed anything else, each time being told they were just a bit behind. I never got a clear answer on whether they were going with other candidates or if I was moving to the final round (a meeting with the ED), though I've seen the same job posted continuously since then. I found this incredibly rude and unprofessional, basically being ghosted by the organization. Even though I admire their work, I think my experience shows their administrative issues, and I feel like I dodged a bullet.
- If a student told you they brought a knife to school, what action would you take?
