Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Freeport-McMoRan.
Technician
It was a moderate interview process. Started with a phone call, then a panel interview. No big difficulty. I met with the senior engineer and their direct report.
- How do you handle a heavy workload?
Laboratory Technician
This was for a Laboratory Technician role at the Climax Molybdenum Mine in Leadville, CO, focused on processing ore by analyzing minerals with ICP-OES and X-ray diffraction. The interview started with a phone screen, followed by webcam-recorded psychometric tests for the hiring manager, which asked about my ability to handle working in challenging environmental conditions (noisy, cramped, dark, hot). About a week later, I had an hour-long videocall with the facility operator. They asked about my past work experience, my interest in the company, my knowledge of certain instruments used at the facility, and my comfort with living in a mountain environment. Roughly five hours after that call, I got an email saying I wasn't selected and another candidate got the job.
- Regarding safety, what are your thoughts?
- Could you explain the working principles of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS)?
- How do you see your past experience contributing to your career growth in this role?
Laboratory Technician
I applied online at Freeport McMoRan’s website for two laboratory technician positions. It took several weeks before I received a phone call from HR scheduling an interview with the Henderson team. A few days later, I had the phone interview. It’s a dial-in service, which was easy to get signed into. The interview focuses on who you are as an individual, how you’d work alongside your future colleagues, and relevant work experience that can be applied for your role. It took 1.5 months after my interview for them to reach out to do the background check. Once that passed, it took another couple of weeks to offer the job. I haven’t begun yet but I’m very excited to begin working with this company.
- Tell me about a time you worked in extreme hot or cold weather.
- How do you prioritize safety, and what steps do you take to ensure your own and your colleagues' safety?
- What makes you a strong candidate for this position?
