Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Fractal.
Software Engineer Intern
It was an on-campus interview process. It began with an aptitude test. Candidates who passed the aptitude round then proceeded to a technical test. This test included Python multiple-choice questions, SQL coding, and data structures and algorithms (DSA). Those who successfully cleared the technical round then had two interviews: a technical interview and an HR interview.
- Can you walk me through your resume and any prior internship experiences?
- Could you elaborate on your Python DSA knowledge, specifically concerning searching algorithms?
Software Engineer
The interview process involved four rounds: two technical rounds focusing on React and JavaScript, followed by a managerial round also on React and JavaScript. Finally, there was an HR round with multiple discussions. It was very difficult to get in touch with the HR team at Fractal; they were unresponsive. The HR person handling the offer wasn't coordinated with the person making the offer. My offer was below my current salary because several HR people were involved but not communicating. It was a terrible HR experience.
- Questions about React fundamentals
- Questions about JavaScript fundamentals
- Questions about design patterns
Software Engineer
The interview process for this role seemed to have some issues with middle management, despite the company's claims about its culture. It appears HR communication was poor, and they proceeded with the entire process even though my salary expectations were outside their budget. After all the rounds, they tried to make it seem like HR was doing me a favor by offering significantly less than my expectations, which I had stated upfront. When HR asked for my expectations again, they acted surprised and suggested a hike might only be possible if I had another offer. Although I received and was interested in another offer, Fractal's offer was still below that and my initial expectations. After some calls, we mutually agreed on a figure, and I decided to accept. However, I was then presented with the original, lower offer, with HR stating the agreed-upon figure needed senior approval. Almost a week later, after multiple follow-ups, HR informed me that the approval couldn't be obtained, even though I was already receiving onboarding emails without accepting the offer. While I don't have an issue with the offered amount, the way candidates are treated, misled, and essentially harassed throughout the process is problematic.
- Can you describe the projects you've worked on?
