First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Deputy Manager
There will be a competency based interview, and the assessment is optional. For senior roles, the interview will be in English. They want answers based on examples from your current or previous job.
- Discuss your competencies.
- How do you work with others?
- How do you deliver results under pressure?
Manager
Working at the Consulate might not be what you expect when you apply. I interviewed for a manager role, and during a 3-person panel interview, they kept saying I'd be doing menial tasks. That's a great way to describe the job! British people are often seen as cold, and this interview didn't help. At the end, I had to take a "skills" test. If you're testing my ability to handle weird situations, then the test was fitting. They also scheduled the interview for 3 pm but made me wait until 3:45 pm. Imagine starting 45 minutes late – what an impression! Just because I need a job doesn't mean my time isn't valuable.
- Is there a definitively correct way to answer this hypothetical scenario?
Trade Manager
It was a competency-based panel interview that lasted about 40 minutes. There were three interviewers. All the questions were competency-based, asking about my past experiences. No personal questions, very professional. The panel took notes during the interview and at the very end, they gave me detailed information about the rest of the hiring process. There's a writing test and an English-local language translation test.
- Can you provide a specific example from your past experiences where you.. ?
