Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at foodpanda.
Data Analyst
Started with an initial call with HR to schedule the first interview. Then had an introductory call with the lead analyst where they asked some basic SQL questions. After that, there was a take-home SQL test to complete within 3 hours. Finally, I was invited for a live SQL test and an interview with the heads.
- What are the different types of SQL joins?
- Can you explain the difference between the HAVING clause and the GROUP BY clause?
Data Analyst
The interview process was a complete waste of time, annual leave, or even license money if you had to buy it. The overall experience was bad. They made candidates do a pre-assessment task that included an online aptitude and personality test, plus an SQL and data visualization test using Tableau, which isn't free software and might require purchasing a license. Nobody was there to open the door when they knew someone was coming for an interview. Also, no one informed us we could bring our own laptops for a better presentation. There was a lot of miscommunication. During the interview, it felt like they were interviewing for an assistant manager role, not a data analyst. The questions were very business-oriented and completely ignored the 'data (and technical aspects needed to succeed as a data analyst)' part of the job. Again, a lot of miscommunication. They treated the completed Tableau dashboard as a 'presentation,' like a PowerPoint, seemingly unaware it was part of the pre-assessment. So much miscommunication and misalignment regarding the actual interview objectives and the role itself. They made the candidate sit and wait in the conference room for a long time before finally letting them leave, probably to discuss whether to proceed. This was a waste of the candidate's time as this discussion could happen later, and it was a missed opportunity for the staff to give the promised office tour.

Data Analyst
I had a really bad on-site interview in Singapore with the Sr. Director of Data Analytics for the bar raiser round. The earlier rounds were great though. This interviewer had really poor etiquette, which is why I'm sharing this experience to hold people accountable. When I found out about the final round, I asked to move it to the next week so I could prepare, but they insisted on that same week. I thought they just wanted to wrap things up quickly. But now it's been a month, and they're still saying they're interviewing and deciding. During the interview, they kept cutting me off. It's okay to ask for clarification, but they kept saying things like, 'oh, you should have done this, or why not do that.' The point of a behavioral interview is for me to explain a situation and how I handled it, being brief but giving key details. The interviewer didn't seem to know what they wanted and just interrupted me while I was trying to explain. They also came across as dismissive, annoyed, and impatient the whole time, with a real 'my way or the highway' attitude. They might be experienced, but that doesn't excuse how they treat people.
