The HR person, I'm not sure if they were an intern, was really sharp and asked insightful questions. I then had a first-round interview with the director for the Singapore MD office, let's call him KK. KK was a bit of an unusual interviewer; his thought process seemed a bit scattered. When I proposed a solution to a problem he presented, including hypothesis test parameters and an example of how I'd test it, he struggled to understand. He even suggested changing the test zone to a different town, and I had to explain that it wouldn't affect the test outcome, which seemed to annoy him. I asked him some questions, and his answers were quite puzzling. For instance, I don't get how not traveling much in Foodpanda compared to Grab is a selling point for Foodpanda. While he might enjoy it because he can spend time with his son, it didn't give me a reason to be excited about working there. When I tried to understand his key priorities, he just repeated the job scope. I didn't get a sense of any exciting projects, challenges, or hurdles for the role from his response. Regarding his management style, he couldn't recall a failed project or how he mentored his team through it, just vaguely defining failure and learning from it without demonstrating leadership or management skills. Unsurprisingly, I already know the outcome of this interview and wish the successful candidate luck working for KK, who does seem like an interesting character.

I had an initial call with HR to go over my background and career goals. Surprisingly, they let me know that the roles I applied for were already filled. However, the HR person was kind enough to suggest another position and asked if I'd be interested in hearing more. I got an interview scheduled with the hiring manager within a week. After that, HR sent over some case studies to complete and submit within 24 hours. I then met with the team, which I think was to check for overall fit. It was a pretty good hiring experience overall.

The recruiter was not proactive with updates, and I had to initiate contact for any information. Responses were delayed, and the promised timelines were not met. I experienced ghosting and repeated rescheduling. The interview process was unnecessarily complex, involving multiple rounds, an on-the-spot coding interview, and a lengthy take-home coding assignment including SQL and a BI test. During the interview with the hiring manager, it was mentioned that the team is not technical and doesn't require deep dives into technical systems, yet I was rejected for not being experienced enough, which felt contradictory and lacked transparency. Overall, it was a poor experience that negatively impacts my view of applying for future roles.
