It was a phone screen for the first round. The second round was conducted online over zoom, even though I'm local. They ended up not hiring anyone for the role, and I had to initiate contact to learn about this.

The hiring process was super slow, taking over 45 days from when they said they'd call me for an onsite to actually having it. I had to chase them multiple times, and their excuses felt a bit awkward, but I let it slide. I ended up talking to about 4-5 people: some engineers, senior product folks, business users, and my potential peers. It's interesting how this company promotes a lot of junior people very quickly into senior roles, sometimes with limited experience – felt very typical of Silicon Valley. HR even mentioned they do this to preserve the company culture. One junior engineer interviewed me, and it was odd because they asked a really vague question. I tried to clarify or get a more methodical approach, but they insisted on their own way. I told them I could answer it briefly or in-depth, gave a quick answer, and they moved on, saying they got what they needed. The feedback I got was I don't understand how to build in detail, which felt contradictory since they pushed me in a different direction. Honestly, I'm glad I won't be working with that immature engineer, but this feedback needs to go up the chain. It's not okay for HR to insist on a senior person interviewing someone and then not coach them on how to ask questions properly. That specific engineer seemed inexperienced, which was also clear from their LinkedIn. The other interviewers were great, including the hiring manager.

  • What is your approach to narrowing down or methodically dissecting a question that is too vague or broad, and what would you aim to achieve?
  • I was interviewed by 4 - 5 different people from Eng., Senior Product people, Business users, and peers in Product management. What was interesting about this company is that - many junior people were promoted too soon and are in the senior roles across the company. May be, this is a very typical Silicon Valley company, where people who has been there barely for a couple of years got promoted too soon without any real experience. This is not a direct critique of anyone, but they need to introspect clearly, whether this is how they want to grow. Even HR, during the interview said that many junior folks are in senior positions and we want to preserve the culture of the company.
  • During the interview process, like a typical Silicon Valley company, a random junior engineer interviewing a senior (not just a normal PM position) Product person and asking vague questions.

Got referred by a friend to a recruiter. The recruiter set up a 60-minute screener with the hiring manager. Then, I came in for an on-site and talked with three PMs, a designer, a technical lead, and the Director of Product. We also had lunch together, which was nice. After that, I went back for a business discussion with their Director of Partnerships, CTO, VP of Product, and Head of Technical Recruiting. They extended an offer the very next day.
