I felt like I wasn't given a clear picture of everything when they were considering me for the job. I wanted to chat with someone on the team to get a feel for the work environment and how things are done, but that wasn't an option???? The way they handle recruiting doesn't feel very straightforward, and I wish I'd been kept more in the loop as things went along.

The interview process started with a recruiter phone screen where they asked some basic questions to check my knowledge, mostly about networking. After that, there was a longer interview, about 2.5 hours. This one had a lot of questions covering various networking concepts, terms, and basics. About 25% of the questions were about Linux, VMWare, and Windows servers. They also had a whiteboard session where I had to diagnose and fix some network problems. Overall, there were many questions, but the interviewers were nice and seemed to care more about how I think and reason rather than if I knew every single detail. A heads-up, they're hiring for either a 12-hour day shift or a 12-hour night shift, which includes weekends, so they basically operate 24/7. I think they should have mentioned the shift work during the initial phone screen because I wouldn't have gone that far into the interview otherwise. Also, the offer they made seemed a bit low considering the qualifications they were looking for and what's needed to get through the interview process, which seems to be a common complaint from other employees based on their Glassdoor reviews.

Behavioral Technical

This was the worst interview process ever, I still can't believe how awful it was. I went through two rounds, and the final round was with a higher-up who was incredibly rude. After that, they ghosted me with no updates at all. It was so unprofessional! It really says a lot about the company, so I guess I dodged a bullet.

So basically recruiter hit me up on 7/1/2020 after I put myself out there on LinkedIn. We chatted briefly about the job and it sounded interesting so I sent my resume. About two weeks later, I got scheduled for a Zoom interview with the hiring manager. It was a mix of casual and formal, you know, introductions and then he hit me with technical questions on BGP, spanning-tree, firewalls, etc. A few days after that, I had another phone interview with a senior network engineer. More BGP questions, some IPv6, and then a tough project scenario where I had to suggest solutions. The final interview was with the project manager and business lead. They asked me about my ideal role, threw some scenarios at me to see how I'd handle projects, and asked for an example of a project I led.

  • How would you troubleshoot a BGP neighbor that isn't forming an adjacency?
  • What's the difference between stateful and stateless firewalls and why is spanning-tree important?
  • What are your thoughts on IPv6?
