Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Fitness Together.
Fitness Coach
I found the job opening online and reached out to the owner via email. They responded quickly and we arranged an interview for that same day. During the interview, they asked me about my previous work experience and how I learned about Fitness Together. After reviewing my resume and chatting for a bit, the owner asked me to come back for a second interview. This second interview involved a hands-on component where I had 15 minutes to design a workout and then guide them through it.
- Could you tell me about your previous experience as a trainer?
- Which age groups of clients do you feel most comfortable training?
- What is your background in fitness training?
Personal Trainer
The hiring process was really quick, wrapping up in just 8 days. It started with a phone screen, then an in-person interview, and finished with a practical assessment. The owners seemed like nice people. I was interested in potentially bringing my clients over and needed some details on session costs. They were really cagey about it, not giving a direct answer and talking around the question even when I kept asking. They also didn't seem very open to different ideas about training. When I brought up current research on posture and pain and how the 'bad posture equals pain' idea can be detrimental, they just brushed it off, saying 'all I am hearing is that you're a powerlifter'. I felt incredibly disrespected during the interview. I've seen firsthand how the bad posture/pain narrative affects older clients, and many experts now agree it's causing more harm than good, making people fearful of movement.
- Tell me about your training style.
- Are you current with research regarding posture and pain?
- How do you view the common belief that poor posture leads to pain, and in what ways might this be harmful?
Exercise Physiologist
I applied online and got a call back about a week later. They scheduled me for an interview the following week, and after that, they wanted me to come back for another one. So, I went in again the week after that, and they called me up for *another* interview. Then, I had a final in-person interview the week after that, and they offered me the job a few days later.
- The owner asked me some general interview questions that seemed pretty standard for most jobs.
Personal Trainer
We started with a phone interview. Then, they asked me to make a mock personal training program and actually lead a session with it in person. The final part was going back to the FT facility where one of the personal trainers trained me so I could check out FT's training protocol.
- What are your 5-year career aspirations?
- Can you outline how you'd plan a 45-minute training session?
- Tell me about your training experience and what makes you a good fit for this role.
