Had a 30-minute chat with the recruiter, who was nice and gave good info. She said she'd loop back after talking to the hiring manager but totally ghosted me. So unprofessional, especially for a small company - makes you wonder how they treat their actual employees.

Dan from Finch contacted me on LinkedIn about a job, and I sent in my resume. We had an initial call, and then he set up a 1:1 with my manager. During that phone screen, my manager and I discussed my background and the role's needs. Once my manager approved, Dan and I had some quick calls to set up the virtual interview, and he explained what to expect. The virtual interview involved a case study presentation and meeting my future teammates, where I also got to ask about the job. Everyone was super friendly and helpful about the role and the company vibe.

The interview process had 3 stages: a quick phone screen with a recruiter, a phone conversation with a manager, and then a larger interview block meeting various team members. The process began right as offices and businesses were closing due to the pandemic, so it took 3 months. Despite the timeline, the recruiter and the rest of the team have been lovely in terms of communication and friendliness. The final interview was over zoom, so I wasn't able to see the office/lab space in person, but I received a virtual tour and was still able to speak with everyone to get an idea of their personalities, even with wifi problems. Overall, the interview process adapted well to a remote format. The interview questions ranged from behavioral to management style preferences. It's apparent from the questions that the company cares about professional development, with multiple conversations about my goals and how Finch could help me attain them.

If successful, I was given a take-home assignment that I had a week to complete. This assignment involved a basic statistical analysis of microbiome data, which was manageable. After finishing the take-home task, which allowed flexibility in programming language choice, I had to prepare a presentation for a half-day interview session. I ended up getting a better offer from another company a week after this half-day interview, so I declined Finch without waiting for their response, though I anticipated some communication after a week given the advanced stage of the interviews.
