First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Financial Conduct Authority.
Manager
This was a competency based interview, and they gave us the questions 24 hours before. The interview covered Judgment (how you approach decision-making and analyzing problems), Engagement (how you work with others and bring them along), Delivery (project management), and Self-management (how you respond to challenging circumstances and manage your emotions). After that, there was a psychometric assessment.
- Can you share an instance where you adapted your approach to achieve a positive result?
Head of Department
The whole thing took about 2 months, with two stages. First was an assessment with Penna which included psycometrics tests and two role plays, lasting about 4 hours. Then there was an interview with two directors that focused only on my weak spots from stage 1. It was hard to feel like I was showing my best, but it worked out in the end.
- Can you share an instance where you developed a strategy?
Manager
The interview involved a roleplay where I had to manage a disaffected team member, with an actor playing the part really well. It was mostly competency-based, asking for plenty of examples from my experience, focusing on my management skills, how I handle stakeholders, and if I'd done similar work before. One interviewer was a bit distracting, being on their Blackberry a lot.
- Describe a situation where you had to handle a difficult stakeholder.
