A recruiter reached out because my background seemed like a good fit for an open Product role at Fetch. We had a short call, and I agreed to continue. Then I got this lengthy and intentionally vague assignment to design a new toaster, which took me a few hours. It took a couple of weeks to get feedback on that, but eventually, they invited me to an interview. The first question they hit me with was, "so why do you want to work at Fetch?", which was weird given they contacted me first. It felt a bit like they were asking me out and then immediately asking why I wanted to date them. The rest of the interview was pretty much just asking me to explain why Fetch is so great and successful. They didn't ask anything about my experience or my actual Product knowledge or what I knew about the role they were hiring for.

So before you even talk to a recruiter, you have to do this assignment that they say takes less than two hours. But some people have spent 8 hours on it and still got rejected. I feel like my time is way too valuable to spend that much time on something when they'll probably spend like 5 minutes looking at it. Also, the CTO, who apparently is toxic according to Glassdoor, is now in charge of the PM org too. So, the PMs who are really desperate and don't mind a toxic environment will spend a ton of time trying to make this perfect submission just to get to the next step. This just creates a situation where the wrong people are selected.
