First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan.
Insurance Agent
You'll have a face-to-face interview with a managing partner, who would be your direct boss. If he likes you, you'll take a computer test to gauge your honesty, work ethic, values, and ability to succeed in insurance sales. It's not easy, and most people don't pass. Farm Bureau requires managers to hire people with very high scores on this test, aiming for the top 15%. If you pass with a good score, they'll be eager to hire you because the manager has a new hire quota. They'll tell you whatever you want to hear to get you to join, including promises of making over 100k in three years. However, in my nine years there, I never made that much, and I didn't know many agents who did. Out of 400 agents, only about 10-15 made six figures, with most earning in the mid-50s. They'll say you control your schedule, which is true, but you need to be selling a lot of life insurance to justify your time off to your manager.
- Can you tell us about yourself?
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
Insurance Agent
You'll first have an in-person interview with the managing partner, who would be your direct manager. If they like you, you'll then take a computer-based test. This test assesses your honesty, work ethic, values, and your potential to succeed in insurance sales. It's not overly difficult, but many people don't pass it because Farm Bureau requires a very high score (top 15%) for anyone to be hired. If you do pass with a strong score, they'll be very eager to bring you on board. Your manager has a hiring quota, so if you meet the qualifications, they'll promise you anything to get you to join. They might tell you about high earning potential, like making over 100k in three years. However, in my nine years, I never reached that, and I didn't know many agents who did. Out of 400 agents, only about 10-15 made six figures; most earned in the mid-50s. They'll also say you can control your schedule, which is true, but you need to be selling a lot of life insurance to justify your time off to your manager.
- If you are any sort of salesperson, should you be able to sell yourself first?
- Were there any difficult questions asked?
- Did you take a test on the computer?
Insurance Agent
The interviews were chill and easy to do. Expect to talk about the company and yourself. They wanna know how motivated you are to succeed. Be real but don't be afraid to say you wanna do well.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a tough work challenge and how you handled it to achieve a good outcome?
