Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at FareHarbor.
Senior Backend Engineer
I interviewed for the Senior Backend Engineer role. The process had four stages: a basic programming interview, a chat with the engineering manager, a coding interview, and a system design session. The questions were between easy and medium difficulty, which felt appropriate for a senior position. I got good feedback after each stage and felt good about my answers. But, I was rejected, and they said they found a better candidate. It was frustrating because I heard others had a similar experience. This makes me wonder if the interviews are just for show. It's fine to be rejected if someone is a better fit, but when many people have the same story, it seems like the interviews might be for appearances only. The hiring team should be upfront about why they're interviewing and give real feedback when rejecting someone. Interviews should respect the time candidates put in. Not getting clear reasons for rejection, especially after doing well, left me with a bad feeling. I hope they use this feedback to be more open in their hiring.
- How would you approach flattening objects?
- Could you explain basic graph traversal algorithms like DFS and BFS?
- How would you design a system like Zapier?
Backend Engineer
Had a recruiter call first, then two technical interviews on the same day. The first was a simple problem-solving question, and the second involved BFS. The entire process went well, and I felt I solved the questions effectively, but I was rejected without a clear reason and got no feedback even after asking. The system design interviewer seemed unprofessional and possibly inexperienced, as I struggled to understand their expectations despite detailing trade-offs.
- Solve a simple problem to parse input and extract information.
- Solve a problem using the BFS algorithm.
- Design a system for a specific feature.
Backend Developer
It was an easy interview process. It only took 2 weeks. First was an easy coding interview and then a Round 2 coding and a system design. System design and coding 2 happened on the same day.
- Can you flatten a nested JSON structure recursively?
