First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Fantastic Sams.
Stylist
Had 2 interviews, the first was a phone call, then a technical one. The technical part involved cutting hair for both a man and a woman. I had to take clients from the waiting area and do their hair. It was timed and then checked afterwards. The salon's pay structure depends on your experience, sales targets, and how long services take.
- What is your level of experience?
Director of Operations
I applied for the Director, Salon Operations role at Fantastic Sams International and surprisingly got a call back the next day. We had a phone interview the following week. It felt okay, but the interviewer mostly talked about the industry and what the company had observed, rather than what I could bring to the table as a Director. Even though I felt my potential contributions weren't fully explored, I was still hopeful. Then, I was asked to do a presentation, which I submitted. They said they'd be in touch soon. Weeks went by, then a month, with no word. I followed up three times with no reply. Finally, after a fourth try, they let me know that someone else got the job.
- Can you describe a tough situation you encountered with a franchisee and explain how you resolved it?
Stylist
You can apply on the company website or in the store. Applying in person gives the management a chance to see you and check your professionalism and if you are serious about the job. The first interview might be with the manager, the owner, or both, depending on the franchisee. It's usually a Q&A about your experience, passion for the industry, education, and your strengths and weaknesses. Make sure to dress professionally, like a high-end stylist. The second interview could be a phone call or an in-person meeting with management or the owner, or a technical interview.
- What made you decide to go into cosmetology?
- What attracts you to working at Fantastic Sams?
- In your opinion, what's the hardest aspect of being a hair stylist?
Hairstylist
I was asked to come in for an interview. Then, I was told to schedule a class, which I was excited about because it was free education. The owner also had me schedule a technical session. He wasn't there when I started, and the workers ignored me until I was done. Afterward, one of them said it looked awesome. The owner then asked me to shadow for free for five days and said he'd let me know if I got the job. He also said if I have the passion, I'd do it, or else I might as well be a cashier. It was a terrible experience.
- Are you open to working for five days as a shadow without receiving any pay?
